Psychomotor Agitation: What It Is, and Why the Church Needs to Understand It

Recently I came across this topic. Sharing it for wider awareness. Every pastor has seen it, even if we didn't have a name for it. The visitor who cannot sit still through the sermon, tapping a foot, wringing their hands, rising to pace the back of the sanctuary. The elderly saint in the pew who suddenly seems restless and irritable in a way that is out of character. The young adult in the prayer line who cannot stop moving, whose words come out fast and pressured, whose body seems to be racing even when their spirit longs for peace. Often we reach for spiritual categories first—anxiety of the heart, oppression, a need for deeper surrender. Sometimes that is exactly right. He is tracking a repeatable, self-reinforcing cycle of activity that recurs at every major turning point in the church's growth—from Jerusalem, to Samaria, to Antioch, to the Gentile world. Three elements are usually the first ones readers notice:   proclamation, signs and wonders, and persecution .
